Arutanga is Aitutaki's town: a harbour, a handful of shops, a market building, and the island's main church.
The church
The CICC church at Arutanga dates from the 1820s and is generally described as the oldest in the Cook Islands. It is built of coral lime, with carved and painted interior woodwork worth going in to see.
Sunday
As on Rarotonga, visitors are welcome at the service and the singing is the reason to go. Shoulders and knees covered, arrive before the start, stay to the end.
The harbour
Worth a look for the boats and for the sense of how supply actually reaches an island this size.
