High on the cliffs above Araiti Cove is Kea's grave. The story is told on Mauke and it is worth hearing before you go.

The story

Kea watched from the cliff as her husband Paikea fished beyond the reef. A storm carried him out to sea. He survived, and came ashore on Mangaia — but Kea, not knowing, kept her watch at the cove until she died there.

Visiting

The cove below is small and pretty. The grave above is a place of significance, not a viewpoint. Behave accordingly.

💡 Local tip
It is a grave. Visit quietly, do not climb on it, and take the story seriously — it is still told on Mauke, and Paikea reached Mangaia, which is why the two islands connect it.
