Tapuaetai — One Foot Island — sits at the south-eastern corner of the Aitutaki lagoon. It is small, low and ringed by white sand, and the water around it shades from clear to an improbable turquoise.

The passport stamp

There is a small post office on the island, and it will stamp your passport with a One Foot Island stamp. Bring your passport with you on the boat. People consistently rate this among the better souvenirs of a Cook Islands trip, and it costs almost nothing.

What there is to do

Swim, walk the sandbar, snorkel off the edge, sit in the shade. That is the list, and it is enough. Most lagoon cruises include a stop of an hour or two here with lunch.

Managing expectations

  • It is small. When two or three cruise boats arrive together it feels busy.
  • Facilities are minimal. Bring water, sun protection and anything you will need.
  • Shade is limited and the sun over white sand and pale water is fierce.

Getting there

Boat only. Most people come on a lagoon cruise; a private charter or water taxi transfer gives you the island at a quieter time of day, which is worth considering if the photographs are the point.

Take your passport. The stamp is free or costs very little, and it is the souvenir people are most pleased with afterwards — but you cannot get it if your passport is back at your accommodation.
