The lagoon colour is genuine — but the difference between a good photograph and a disappointing one is mostly timing and glare.
For lagoon colour
High sun, roughly ten to two, is when the water is at its most saturated. It is also the least flattering light for anything else, and the hottest part of the day.
For landscape
Early morning and the last hour of light. Maungapu at the end of the day gives you the whole lagoon in good light.
Practical
- A polariser is the single most useful piece of kit.
- Salt spray on a boat gets everywhere — bring a cloth and something to keep gear in.
- Ask before photographing people, particularly around church or at a family gathering.
💡 Local tip
A polarising filter does more for lagoon photographs than any camera upgrade. It cuts the surface glare and lets the colour underneath come through.
