Cook Islanders are famously welcoming and will forgive a great deal. These are simply the things worth knowing.
Dress
Swimwear at the beach and in the water. Cover up to walk into a shop, a village or anywhere near a church. Topless sunbathing is not acceptable.
Sunday
Quieter and more observed than most visitors expect. Noise, loud activity and visible commerce near a church during service are noticed.
Sacred sites
Marae and burial grounds are tapu. Do not climb on stones, remove anything, or use them as a backdrop.
Land and graves
Family graves are often in front gardens. That land is private and personal — do not wander onto it for a photograph.
Photographs of people
Ask. It is a small place and people are not scenery.

Cover up away from the beach. Swimwear is for the water; walking into a shop or a village in it reads as disrespectful, even where nobody says anything.
