Atiu has grown coffee since the 1800s. The industry collapsed and was later revived, and today it is one of the few things the Cook Islands exports that is genuinely its own.
What a visit involves
Walking the plantation, seeing how the cherries are processed and roasted, and tasting it at the end. It is small-scale and hands-on rather than a polished visitor centre.
Why it is interesting
Because you can see the whole chain in an afternoon — tree to cup — on an island of a few hundred people. That is unusual anywhere.

Buy the beans on the island rather than in Rarotonga. It is cheaper, fresher, and the money goes straight to the growers.
