Atiu suits some visitors enormously and disappoints others, and the difference is entirely about expectations.

Come for

Caves — genuinely world-class, and largely unvisited.
Birds — the best in the country.
Culture that is not staged for anyone. Tumunu is a living tradition, not a show.
Solitude. There are rarely more than a handful of visitors on the island.

Do not come for

Lagoon swimming. The reef is close in and the beaches are small.
Restaurants and nightlife. Meals are usually taken where you stay.
Convenience. Flights are limited, shops are small, cards often are not accepted.

The honest summary

If Aitutaki is the postcard, Atiu is the place people talk about for years afterwards.

Three nights is about right. Two feels rushed given the flight schedule, and by four you will have seen the island unless caving is your particular interest.
