Mangaia's coast is mostly coral rock, with small sand beaches cut into it at intervals. The fringing reef is close and narrow.

Swimming

Possible at some of the beaches at the right tide, but conditions vary a great deal along the coast and locals know where the safe spots are. Ask rather than guess.

Walking the coast road

The main road is flat and quiet, and walking a stretch of it is one of the better ways to see the island — the villages, the makatea wall inland, the reef on the other side.

💡 Local tip

Ask locally where it is safe to swim before you get in. The reef is narrow here and there are places where the water moves out fast.
