Most visitors see Rarotonga and possibly Aitutaki. The outer islands — Atiu, Mangaia, Mauke, Mitiaro — take more planning and reward it.
The constraint
Flights to the outer islands do not run daily. Each island has its own days, and they do not all connect to each other — you will often route back through Rarotonga.
Planning approach
- Start with the flight schedule and build around it.
- Two or three nights per outer island is usually right.
- Book accommodation before you fly — options are few and turning up is not viable.
- Ask about air passes if you are visiting several islands.
Which to choose
Aitutaki for the lagoon. Atiu for caves, birds and tumunu. Mangaia for geology, archaeology and solitude. Mauke for cave pools and the divided church. Mitiaro for lakes and eel.
💡 Local tip
Build the itinerary around the flight schedule, not the other way round. Outer island flights run on set days, and a plan that ignores that will not survive contact with the timetable.
