Muri Beach: the lagoon everyone means when they say Rarotonga

If you have seen one photograph of Rarotonga, it was probably taken at Muri. The lagoon here is wide, shallow and unusually calm, sheltered by the reef and by four small islands — Taakoka, Koromiri, Oneroa and Motutapu — sitting a few hundred metres offshore.

What it is actually like

Warm, clear and shallow enough that you can wade a surprising distance out. The bottom is mostly sand with patches of coral, so reef shoes are worth having if you are walking rather than swimming. It is the most reliably swimmable stretch of water on the island for families.

It is also the busiest. Muri is where most of the lagoon cruises leave from, where the paddleboards and kayaks are, and where a good share of the island's accommodation sits. If you want the photograph without the crowd, come early — before about nine, the lagoon is often empty.

The tide matters more than the weather

This is the single most useful thing to know about Muri. At low tide the water pulls back a long way, the coral heads sit near the surface, and what looked like a swimming lagoon becomes a wade. At high tide it is exactly what you came for. Tide times are posted around the island and shift by roughly an hour a day.

Getting out to the motu

Koromiri and Motutapu are close enough to paddle to on a calm day, and kayaks and paddleboards can be hired along the beach. Taakoka is further and the channel between the motu carries more current than it looks — most people reach it on a lagoon cruise rather than under their own steam.

Practical notes

  • Reef shoes save a lot of grief, particularly at lower tides.
  • There is no shade on the sand in the middle of the day. Rarotonga sits at 21° south and the sun is stronger than it feels in the breeze.
  • Sunscreen washes off into the lagoon. Reef-safe formulations are widely sold on the island and are worth using here.
💡 Local tip
The lagoon is shallow enough to walk a long way out, but at low tide the coral heads are close to the surface and the water barely moves. Check the tide before you plan a swim — high tide is when Muri is at its best.
