Going to church
Visitors are welcomed at Sunday services, and the hymn singing — imene tuki — is one of the genuinely memorable things about the Cook Islands. A few points of courtesy: dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, arrive before the service starts rather than during it, and stay to the end. Many congregations serve tea afterwards and will invite you.
Planning around it
Buy what you need on Saturday. If you are self-catering, do the shop before the weekend. If you want to eat out, check the day before that your choice is open. And if you are travelling between islands, confirm your flight — schedules on Sunday differ.
The upside
